Most guides on "running a personal AI agent" stop at getting it to respond. Almost none ask the next question: **who else can reach it?**

If your agent listens on a public port, uses a Telegram bot token with no allowlist, or shares compute with other tenants, it is not a private agent. It is a public endpoint wearing a personal label. This post explains exactly what "private" should mean in this context — and the three design properties that close the usual exposure gaps.

## The three exposure gaps nobody talks about

### 1. The control plane is reachable from the internet

When you self-host an agent on a VPS, the typical first instinct is to run it and open a port. The control plane — the HTTP interface that accepts commands, manages sessions, or routes prompts — ends up reachable from `0.0.0.0`. That means anyone with the server's IP and a port scanner can attempt to talk to it.

A properly designed private agent binds its control plane to `127.0.0.1` (loopback) by default. Nothing external reaches it directly. The only pathway in is through an authenticated, explicitly exposed channel — like your own Telegram bot.

### 2. Anyone who finds your Telegram bot can message it

Telegram bot tokens are not secrets in the sense that they expire or rotate on discovery. If someone finds your bot username — through a public channel, a scrape, or just guessing — they can `/start` it and start sending messages.

Without an allowlist, the bot will reply. It may share context from your previous sessions. It will consume your AI credits on someone else's queries.

The fix is simple in principle and annoying to implement in practice: at startup, the bot reads a hard-coded list of exactly one Telegram user ID (yours), ignores every update from any other sender, and never advertises that it is doing so. The stranger gets silence. Your sessions remain yours.

### 3. Your agent shares resources with other tenants

This one is structural. On a shared-hosting platform where multiple agents run on the same OS instance, process isolation is only as strong as the platform's process-level separation. A runaway workflow in one agent can exhaust memory that spills into another. File descriptors, temporary directories, and in-process caches can leak across tenants if the platform is not careful.

True isolation means each agent workspace is its own contained environment: separate filesystem root, separate process namespace, no shared in-memory state with other workspaces.

## What "private agent" should actually mean: a checklist

When you run a personal agent yourself, you need to consciously implement every row. Most tutorials do not.

## Why self-rolling gets this wrong almost every time

Here is the typical "self-hosted personal agent" setup:

1. Rent a $6/mo VPS.
2. Clone a repo, drop in an API key, run `python agent.py &`.
3. Open port 8080 or expose a Telegram webhook to `0.0.0.0`.
4. Done — it runs.

The agent works, but:

- Port 8080 is publicly listed on Shodan within hours.
- The Telegram bot has no allowlist.
- Your OpenAI / Anthropic API key is in a plaintext `.env` on a machine you admin manually.
- When the VPS provider migrates you to a new host, the process dies and nobody tells you.

Nothing in the tutorial was wrong. Nobody lied. They just did not build an agent **with privacy as a design constraint**.

## Tips if you are evaluating privacy seriously

- **Audit the bot's allowed senders** before you give it access to sensitive tools. On AgentRoost this is handled at provisioning; on a self-rolled setup, grep your code for where you validate `update.effective_user.id`.
- **Do not use a public group for testing.** Adding your agent to a group immediately expands the allowed-sender surface to every group member. Keep it in a one-on-one chat.
- **Think about what your agent can reach.** A private agent with access to your email and calendar is a high-value target. Ensure the platform (and you) apply least-privilege to tool grants.
- **Prefer loopback + Telegram over HTTP webhooks** for personal agents. An HTTP webhook creates a publicly addressable endpoint; a Telegram long-poll does not.
